Ace Martina Leads in Wales
Germany’s Martina Eberl shot a sparkling seven-under-par 65 in fine weather to take a one stroke lead at the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe in Llanelli.
Wales’ leading lady Becky Brewerton posted a 66 to share second with the English pair of Georgina Simpson and Henrietta Zuel.
Eberl first played the back nine at Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club in four-under-par 32. A hole in one at the par three second, her 11th, lifted the recent BMW Ladies Italian Open champion into a share of the lead with Zuel. Birdies at the third and fifth holes gave the 27-year-old from Munich a two shot lead over the rest of the field, but she dropped her only shot of the day at the par-four eighth narrowing her lead to one.
“I’m very pleased with the score,” said Eberl, a two-time tournament winner on the Ladies European Tour. “I’m glad there were no pictures on the score card because I was really hitting the ball not well. I birdied most of the par fives and of course my hole in one helped too, which wasn’t a great shot either! That doesn’t matter at the end of the day. I take it with pleasure and I will go out tomorrow and try to hit the ball a lot better.”
