Irish Seniors Open: Gordon Brand in the hunt

Euorpean Seniors Tour Gordon Brand is the leading Brit in the hunt for the Irish Seniors Open at Ballyliffin after today's opening round.

The Englishman carded a one under par 70 to finish three shots behind Alan Tapie of the United States, whose 67 was the lowest score of the day.

Tapie shot five birdies and one bogie at the Co Donegal course on his way to equalling the lowest first round score on the European Seniors Tour this season.

The Californian is two shots clear of Italian Giuseppe Cali and Luis Carbonetti of Argentina.

Afterwards Tapie said: "I'm pretty familiar with links golf and I like it. This course is about as linksy as you can get. You get all different lies on the fairway and it's a good test.

"You'll be lucky to go all three days and not find any trouble out here. You'll have to deal with it when it comes. I was fortunate not to have to today."
