Nationwide tour stop all about No. 99

Nationwide TourThe golfers may be looking to shoot a low number but everything else adds up to 99 at the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic Nationwide Golf Tournament.

Start with the purse of $800,099 — one of the largest on the Nationwide tour this season.

Then consider that Samsung Electronics is donating $99 to the Wayne Gretzky Foundation for every celebrity birdie.WAYNE GRETZKY FOUNDATION

You get the idea very quickly that everything at this pro/am tournament is focused very much on Gretzky and the No. 99 that he immortalized during his National Hockey League career.

“I’m just thrilled that so many athletes, including my former teammates, have chosen to participate in this tournament,” Gretzky said in a release Wednesday.

“At the end of the day, we’re just going to have a lot of fun and hopefully our celebrity guests can sink a few birdie putts and support this great cause.”

The tournament teams up 160 pro golfers with 160 celebrities and amateurs.

It begins today with rounds at both The Raven at Lora Bay and The Georgian Bay Club. The teams switch courses for Friday’s second round.

Only the top 60 pros (including ties), top six pro/celebrity pairings, and top four pro/amateur duos move on to the final two rounds at The Georgian Bay Club Saturday and Sunday.

Proceeds from the first-annual Wayne Gretzky Classic go to the Great One’s foundation, which helps underprivileged children in North America play hockey.

Gretzky has brought a number of celebrities to this event. And considering it’s in Canada, it’s no wonder that the celebrity list includes 22 current and former NHL players and former NHL coach Pierre McGuire.

The list of players includes several of Gretzky’s former teammates — Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Marty McSorley, Grant Fuhr, and Kelly Hrudey.

There are also several actors including Canadian Alan Thicke (Growing Pains) and Kevin Sorbo of Hercules fame.

The football contingent includes quarterbacks John Elway (Denver Broncos), Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills), and Damon Allen (Toronto Argos). NBA great Charles Barkley will also compete.

The winning pro golfers will receive $144,017, while the winning amateur golfer receives a new Ford Flex.
