Playing for survival on the Hooters Tour

Young and old, professional golfers in the Onion Creek Classic yearn to play on the PGA Tour - and mini-tours help them get there

When contestants in the Onion Creek Classic arrive for their appointed tee times, they are not greeted by chirping golf groupies, fawning agents, autograph seekers, equipment peddlers, security detail or hand-held cameras beaming their faces on Golf Channel.

They are met by a large, orange Hooters balloon.

They haul their own bags to the range. They fetch their own water to wet their own towels. If they're hungry, they may get a hot dog. Hot dogs cost $5.

But when the starter announces their names at the Onion Creek Club, they don't see a par-5 opening hole with trees on the right and bunkers on the left.

They see the PGA Tour.
